2 former SoCal Edison employees awarded $460 million in workplace retaliation

Two men who sued for being forced out of their jobs at Southern California Edison after complaining of sexual and racial harassment have been awarded $440 million in punitive damages, attorneys have said.

The punitive damages awarded Thursday by a Los Angeles County jury are in addition to $24.6 million in compensatory damages awarded to Alfredo Martinez and Justin Page on Wednesday, the deRubertis law firm said in a statement. .

The men sued electric utility SoCal Edison and its parent company, Edison International, over activities at a utility office in the South Bay area of ​​LA County.

Both men claimed they suffered retaliation after reporting being harassed.

The jury awarded Martinez punitive damages of $300 million from Edison International and $100 million from SoCal Edison. Page was awarded $30 million in punitive damages from Edison International and $10 million from SoCal Edison.

The bulk of the compensation sum – $22.37 million – went to Martinez.

The defendants will attempt to overturn the verdict, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“The jury’s decision does not conform to the facts and the law and does not reflect who we are or what we stand for, and we intend to challenge the decision and seek a new trial,” the court said. SoCal Edison spokeswoman Diane Castro.
