Why should voters elect you over your opponents?

Voters should choose me because of my experience, hard work, integrity, and respect for all people in Broward County. I will embody what the function of a judge should be, which I have been able to observe during my experience in litigation. I always listen to everything everyone has to say before I respond. This simple habit has served me well and will be invaluable on the bench as I avoid bias. It is ingrained in me to treat everyone inside and outside the courtroom with dignity and respect. I like to explain complex topics in a way that can be understood by most. I have a very diverse legal background which gives me the experience to run a courtroom efficiently and fairly.

Doing the right thing has never been difficult for me. My proven track record, service and integrity will serve me well in my duties as a judge in Broward County. I am committed to providing the people of Broward County with the kind of judge we need and deserve. I have the temperament to react to any situation with reason, integrity and fairness. My computer training and my time as a correctional officer for the Dade County Department of Corrections only enhances my ability to serve the people of Broward County in what will continue to be a rapid implementation of equity and technology in the courtroom. I am confident Broward County voters will agree that I am the right judge for the job because of my dedication and commitment to improving our community.

In your life experience, what best qualifies you to serve as a judge?

All of my life experiences, both personal and professional, legal and business, are my basis for being a judge of which the community will be proud. I have experience in a wide range of legal areas and in a wide range of legal proceedings, from county court to federal court. First and foremost I am respectful, dedicated, loyal to the law and committed to justice for the people of Broward County. My decision-making is reasoned, decisive and fair.

I have conducted trials to jury verdict in the criminal circuit, civil county, civil circuit and federal civil. In addition to my litigation experience, I have negotiated civil contracts, family law settlement agreements, and personal injury and civil litigation settlements. I have pleaded various motions as part of my practice in civil law and family law. In the practice of law, I have developed the skills and temperament necessary to deal with difficult parties, difficult clients and difficult lawyers, in a way that maintains the dignity of the practice of law without compromising the interest of my client.

I have been married to my wife, Mindy Brown, for 37 years. I have been a resident of Broward County for 34 years; Mindy and I raised our three children in Broward County. All attended public schools. Our youngest child, who died at the age of 33 in 2017, suffered from a serious illness and received special education services. This life experience taught me the value of every human life and the struggle that exists to navigate the healthcare industry and the education system. This experience has also helped me develop the ability and perseverance to overcome the obstacles that every person and family faces from time to time.

I was raised by my mother and stepfather, and they instilled in me the importance of good character and honesty. I started working when I was 14 and have always understood the value of hard work. My experiences, personal and professional, are what give me the empathy to be the kind of judge the people of Broward County will be proud of.

What are the top three challenges facing the justice system in Broward County, Florida, or the United States?

Maintain public confidence in justice. The ability of the system to provide all parties with a fair opportunity to be heard without undue delay. The escalation of legal costs for the parties and the system.
