Hyundai Motor Group’s Luc Donckerwolke named World Car Person of the Year 2022

Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Design and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, is World Car Person of the Year 2022, recognized for his role in overseeing innovative new models for the Korean automaker, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the Genesis GV60.

The accolade, awarded by 102 journalists from 33 countries, recognizes automotive industry professionals who have made a significant impact through their contributions in the year preceding the award.

Donckerwolke, who joined the group in 2016 and succeeded Peter Schreyer as creative director in 2017, speaks eight languages ​​and collects, restores and drives vintage Porsches.

He stepped down for several months in 2020 to focus on his health and has since gone from strength to strength, cementing Genesis’ “athletic elegance” design emphasis that landed its flagship G70 sedan in the top 10. contenders for the 2022 World Car of the Year (along with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Tucson), the GV70 SUV in the top five finalists of the World Luxury Car 2022 and the Ioniq 5 and EV6 in the top five of the World Car Design 2022.

During his 30-year career, he worked for many prestigious brands, including Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and Audi.

During his time at Seat, he delivered the Tribu concept vehicle which was unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, followed by the Ibiza and Leon, the marque’s two best-selling models.

During his 30-year career, he worked for many prestigious brands, including Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and Audi.

Within the Volkswagen Group, he was involved in the development of the Audi A2 and, as head of design at Lamborghini, he was responsible for models such as the Diablo GT, Murcielago and Gallardo, winning numerous accolades in the process, notably the Prix Point Rouge in 2003.

In December 2012, he became head of design at Bentley and led the development of the EXP 10 Speed ​​6 hybrid concept car.

Previous World Car Person of the Year recipients have been Toyota Chairman and CEO Akio Toyoda in 2021; Carlos Tavares, CEO of Groupe PSA, in 2020; the late Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA (PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, now Stellantis), Chairman and CEO of Ferrari and Chairman of global agriculture and construction company CNH Industrial, in 2019 and Hakan Samuelsson, Chairman- CEO of Volvo Car Group, in 2018.

The World Car Person of the Year award is just one of seven accolades given annually by the World Car Awards, which were launched in 2004 and include World Car Design, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Urban Car , World Electric Vehicle and World Car of the Year.

The winners will be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 13.
