As a lawyer, judge or both, describe the types of cases you have typically handled. My practice deals with family law, domestic violence, addiction and a small portion of civil matters.

If you are a lawyer, how many cases have you tried in the last five years? Of these cases, how many were tried before juries and how many were tried before a judge?

Probably about 100. These cases were bench trials.

If you are a judge, how many jury trials have you presided over that resulted in verdicts and judgments?

PUBLIC SERVICE

Why are you running for this office?

I believe that every citizen has the right to have an impartial judge capable of administering justice fairly. A judge must not only be impartial, but demonstrate integrity, respect, proper character and behavior, compassion, know the law and obey it. Based on my life experience, my community experience, and my legal experience, I am the right candidate to be a judge because I have all of these attributes.

If you have chosen to run for judicial office against an incumbent, state why you have chosen to do so.

If you have applied for appointment as a judge through a judicial nominating commission, provide details, including year(s) and results.

I asked for a date a few times; however, I was not chosen.

Why should voters elect you over your opponents?

Based on my life experience, my legal experience, and my community involvement, voters should elect me. There is something to be said about the experience of life. Based on many trials and tribulations throughout my life, he taught me what is needed on a judge’s bench. There is something to be said about legal experience. I am rated AV, which is the highest rating a lawyer can have in terms of both legal capacity and ethical standards. I am in court almost every day. I have experience seeing both sides due to my legal background. There is something to be said for community engagement. For the past 20 years I have been knee deep in my community (Broward County) trying as hard as I can and I know the different issues that people face. As for my opponents, they are both qualified. However, there is no place for politics in the courthouse or on the bench. Additionally, experience comes from trying cases and dealing with litigants.

In your life experience, what best qualifies you to serve as a judge?

I went back to school at the age of 37 as a single parent of two boys. It took me nine years to complete my undergraduate and law studies. During this time I have been through many trials and tribulations that have really affected who I am and what I want to accomplish. I always wanted to be a lawyer, then finally a judge, which is the pinnacle of my career. Three years ago, I had the misfortune of cancer. I overcame it and have been cancer free for 3 years. I still haven’t lost the dream of becoming a judge. I also have a son with a disability and because of that, it helped me understand what families go through.

What are the top three challenges facing the justice system in Broward County, Florida, or the United States?
