Scientific Fellowship (BI) Employment with UNIVERSITY OF ALGARVE

NOTICE No. 013/2022


TITLE: A postdoctoral fellowship

A call is now open for a post-doctoral research fellowship under the Domestication of the Opium poppy in Prehistoric Europe (DOPE) project, PTDC/HAR-ARQ/1709/2021, funded by the Regional Operational Program of the Algarve (CRESC Algarve 2020), through Portugal 2020 and Portugal 2020 and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with the following conditions:

Field of research : Biological Sciences.

Admission Requirements: In addition to the requirements mentioned in the new University of Algarve Research Grants Regulations, namely Article 6 (, the selection conditions include:

  1. Have obtained a doctorate (or have concluded one before the start of the fellowship) in biological sciences, preferably in the field of botany, plant physiology or plant molecular biology;
  2. Have laboratory experience in the analysis of plant gene expression (ideally using RNA-seq), as well as in the extraction and quantification of RNA;
  3. Have experience in bioinformatics analysis of next-generation sequencing data;
  4. Fluency in English, spoken and written (preferred);
  5. Previous work in population genetics (preferred);
  6. Have programming skills in R or Python (preferred).

Candidates must be enrolled in a degree course of study or in a postgraduate course that does not confer a university degree, taught at the University of the Algarve, except in cases where there is no training offer at the UAlg in the field of competition.

Work plan: The grantee will be responsible for 1) seed germination of cultivated and wild species of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.); 2) perform DNA extraction for the genotype by sequencing; 3) plan and conduct an RNA-seq experiment on three tissues (leaf, capsule and stem) in six cultivated and wild poppy varieties; 4) analyze GBS and RNA-seq data using specific R and Python software or packages (TASSEL, Stacks, Structure, Adegenet, Mr. Bayes, Bowtie, BWA, Cufflinks, Galaxy or others deemed appropriate); 5) deposit sequences and gene expression experiments in appropriate organized databases; 6) Optionally, perform DNA extraction from historical herbarium samples.

Applicable laws and regulations: Status of Scientific Researcher, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, conferred by Decree-Law 123/2019, of July 28and and the University of Algarve Research Grant Regulations

Place of work: The work will be carried out at the University of the Algarve, Gambelas Campus, in Faro, and, in specific situations, at other places prescribed in the work plan, and under the scientific supervision of Dr. Hugo Rafael Cardoso Oliveira.

Duration of Fellowship: The fellowship will have an initial contract for a period of 12 months, starting on 1st from July 2022. The scholarship contract can be renewed for up to 24 months, taking into account the new regulations on research grants from the University of Algarve available at

Amount of monthly alimony: The monthly alimony corresponds to 1,686.00 euros. Alimony will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

The selection criteria will be as follows: In accordance with the 2nd paragraph of Article 11 of the University of the Algarve Research Grants Regulations, the evaluation of candidates focuses only on the following criteria:

a) curriculum evaluation (scientific production over the last three years, publications in peer-reviewed international journals


b) candidate’s suitability for the work program (laboratory experience with plant gene expression studies, preferably using RNA-seq; knowledge of bioinformatics);

c) maintenance.

These criteria will have the following evaluation: a) evaluation of the curriculum (40%); b) candidate’s suitability for the work program (40%); c) maintenance (20%).

The selection process will include an interview with the three best candidates evaluated according to the above criteria, selected by the evaluation panel, which will have a maximum weight of 20%. Candidates who are not selected for an interview will have a weight of 80% in all other evaluation criteria.

The final ranking of the candidates is expressed on a scale of 0 to 20, with a notation going up to tenths of places.

Publication and notification of results: the final results will be published by means of a list ordered according to the final mark and displayed in a visible and public room of building 1 ICArEHB, no Edif cio 1 do Campus de Gambelas (FCHS) and press releases to candidates. by e-mail to the addresses indicated by each candidate.

Deadline for applications and submission forms: the call is open from 04/14/2022 to 05/31/2022

Applications must be accompanied by the following documents:

Official ID (simple copy or legal equivalent). If you have a nationality other than Portuguese, you must present a residence permit, permanent residence certificate or long-term resident status, valid on the start date of the scholarship, each of which can be replaced, in its absence, by a declaration of commitment. However, one of the previous ones must be issued during the contracting phase, under penalty of forfeiture of the grant;

Copy of the qualification certificates of the university degrees held, specifying the final classification and, if possible, the classifications obtained in all the subjects taken;

If the doctorate was issued by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the rules established in Legislative Decree no. 66/2018 of August 16, and all required formalities must be completed by the termination deadline for submitting the application. If the completed process is not found before the end of the application period, the candidate must prove that he has applied for recognition of the diploma.

– The supporting documents certifying that the candidate meets all the conditions required for this scholarship, namely the certificate of registration for a degree course or post-graduate training;

– Declaration of the supervisor taking responsibility for the supervision of the work plan, in accordance with article 5 -A of the status of the scientific researcher, as well as ensuring the conditions necessary for the development of the work plan and in accordance with the article 13 of the status of Scientific Research Officer;

Complaints and appeals Deadlines and procedures

On the decision to grant the research grant, the candidates may, if they wish, make observations on the hearing of the interested parties, within 10 working days, under the conditions provided for by the code of administrative procedure. .

Of the practice or omission of any act of the evaluation jury, candidates may lodge a complaint with the authority, within 10 working days.

The final decision of the evaluation committee can be appealed to the recteur within 15 working days following the corresponding notification.

fellowship contractWith the selected candidate(s) and after receiving all the required documentation, a fellowship contract will be signed in accordance with the post-doctoral fellowship model.Evaluation of the fellow(s) At the end of each period of the scholarship contract, the activity developed by the scholarship holder(s) is evaluated by the supervisor, applying the following criteria, in accordance with the attached model: a) Achievement of objectives – assess the level of achievement of results by the scholarship holder, taking into account the agreed work plan and schedule of activities (75%); b) Behavioral skills – assess the personal characteristics highlighted during the period of evaluation, namely those related to professionalism and rigor in all the activities carried out (15%); c) Personal attitude – evaluating the personal commitment and availability shown during the evaluation period, taking into account factors such as the effort made, the interest st and the motivation shown, as well as the receptivity to the recommendations of the management team (10%).

The University of Algarve reserves the right to cancel this application procedure if, by any means, the celebration of the contract with the funding entity is not established.
